Short answer
What is the minimum child support in Bulgaria in 2026?
The minimum monthly support for one child is one quarter of the national minimum wage (Art. 142(2) Family Code). With the minimum wage at €620.20 from 1 January 2026, that is €155.05 per child per month. This is only the floor – the court sets the actual amount according to the child's needs and the paying parent's means and can award more. There is no upper limit.

This is the statutory minimum. The court sets the actual amount according to the child's needs and the parent's means – often above the minimum. There is no upper limit.
The calculator shows the statutory minimum under Bulgarian law. The actual amount is set by the court based on the specific circumstances. The result is not legal advice.
How is the amount of child support determined?
The Bulgarian Family Code (СК) sets only a floor – one quarter of the minimum wage for one child. Above that, the court weighs two factors: the child's needs (age, health, education, usual standard of living) and the means of the paying parent (income, assets, other children they support).
- Support is owed until the child turns 18 and, if the child continues their education, until 20 for secondary-school pupils and until 25 for university students, provided the parent can pay without serious hardship (Art. 144 Family Code).
- Back support can be claimed for no more than one year before the claim is filed (Art. 149 Family Code).
- The amount can be changed if circumstances change permanently – for example, the child grows older, their needs increase or the parent's income changes.
Frequently asked questions
Does an unemployed parent have to pay child support?
Yes. Unemployment does not release a parent from the obligation. The court assumes that every parent of working age can earn at least the minimum wage and awards at least the minimum amount.
Is there a maximum amount of child support?
No. The law sets only a minimum. Where the parent earns well and the child's needs are greater, the court can award support well above the minimum.
Can I get child support for past periods?
Yes, but for no more than one year before the claim is filed (Art. 149 Family Code). So do not delay the claim if the other parent is not paying.
What can I do if the support awarded is not paid?
The court judgment, or an agreement approved by the court, is an enforceable title. A bailiff can enforce it by garnishing wages, bank accounts or assets. Persistent failure to pay child support can also be a criminal offence under the Bulgarian Criminal Code.
Does child support go up when the minimum wage increases?
Not automatically. The amount awarded stays the same until the court changes it. If it falls below the new minimum or the child's needs increase, you can apply for an increase.
If you live abroad or are not a Bulgarian citizen
Many families are split between Bulgaria and another country. Here is what matters when you or the other parent live outside Bulgaria, when the child lives abroad, or when one parent is a foreigner – for example, a British, American or German parent and a Bulgarian parent.
The other parent lives in another country. Where do I file the child support claim?
Within the EU, as a rule you can file in the country where the child is habitually resident (Regulation (EC) No 4/2009). If the child lives with you in Bulgaria, the Bulgarian court has jurisdiction even if the other parent lives in, say, Germany or Italy. If the child lives with you in another EU country, you can usually sue there.
Which country's law determines the amount?
Usually the law of the country where the child is habitually resident (2007 Hague Protocol). If the child lives in Bulgaria, the Bulgarian minimum applies. If the child lives in Germany, Spain or another country, that country's law applies – even if both parents are Bulgarian.
The parent abroad does not pay. How can the support be collected?
A Bulgarian child support judgment is recognised and enforced in other EU countries without a separate procedure. You can also apply through the central authority in Bulgaria (the Ministry of Justice), which forwards the application to the competent authority in the other country – usually free of charge for you.
What if the other parent lives outside the EU – for example in the UK or the USA?
Since Brexit, the UK is no longer covered by the EU Regulation. The UK and the USA are both parties to the 2007 Hague Convention on the international recovery of child support, so applications go through the central authorities in the same way. With other countries, bilateral legal-assistance treaties apply, or the judgment is recognised under the Bulgarian Private International Law Code. The options depend on the specific country.
A foreigner and a Bulgarian have a child together. How is child support determined?
The parents' citizenship is not decisive – what matters is where the child lives. If the child lives in Bulgaria, the case can be heard by a Bulgarian court under Bulgarian law, and the foreign parent owes at least the minimum amount. Serving documents abroad adds several months to the case.
The paying parent earns abroad. Will the higher income be taken into account?
Yes. The court assesses the parent's real means, including income earned abroad. That is why it is important to gather evidence of their work and income – contracts, social media posts, information about their home and spending.
I live abroad and my child lives in Bulgaria. Can I handle the case without travelling?
As a rule, yes. A Bulgarian lawyer can represent you in court on the basis of a power of attorney, which you can sign abroad – for example, before a notary with an apostille or at a Bulgarian consulate. Whether you need to attend in person depends on the case; we will tell you in advance.
